It is clear in the above referenced text, Philippians 1: 1-30, that Paul possesses a passionate faith in Christ. It is clear that this passion has resulted in a strength and power that cannot be undone by circumstances. Passion is a powerful motivator!
We all have passions (sports, nature, material possessions …). But Paul, had an all-consuming passion! It was the kind of passion spoken of in this quote by Brain Schwartz; “A consuming passion is the last thing you think about before you go to bed at night and the first thing you think about when you wake up.” He goes on to say, “It feels like an addiction, and if someone told you to stop, it would be impossible for you to give it up.” Paul had a consuming passion!
John Maxwell describes passion as “the fuel for the will,” He says, “Passion turns have-to into want-to.” Life coach Jan Gordon describes passion as “the essence of commitment.” She says, “Passion is that which deeply stirs us. It’s the fire from within and that which motivates us. When passion is missing, our actions lack meaning and we don’t get the results we want… but when the seed of passion is nurtured it will blossom into an unwavering commitment that cannot be scorched by the heat of negative circumstances!” Paul had a consuming passion!
PAUL’S CONSUMING PASSION WAS TO KNOW CHRIST! (Phil. 3: 10-11).
Paul’s consuming passion resulted in three things, and if we possess a consuming passion these three things will be true for us as well.
- Perseverance – Pressing on in the face of great hardships.
- Purpose – As believers our purpose is to share Christ with all, in all, and at all times.
- A positive Attitude – I am certain. There is an unwavering conviction concerning the outcome.
We all have passions, but what is our consuming passion? “What is the last thing you think about before you go to bed at night and the first thing you think of when you wake up?”
Do you know what God’s “consuming passion” is? Just look, listen, and taste. It is love for you – that is God’s consuming passion! What is our all-consuming passion?
